Can You Sell a Car With Expired Registration in Indiana?

Can I sell a car with expired plates in Indiana?
Yes. Ownership moves with the signed title, not the registration. Indiana's BMV says the seller removes the license plate at the time of the sale, and the buyer is responsible for a new title, registration and plate. Expired tags don't stop the sale. A missing title is the bigger problem, and even that usually has a fix.
It goes like this more often than not. The car breaks down, or you buy something newer, and the old one gets parked “for now.” A year later the sticker on the plate is out of date and you’re wondering if that makes the car impossible to sell. It doesn’t. This guide from Cash for Junk Cars Gary Indiana explains why, using what Indiana’s BMV says.
Registration and title are two different things
The title says who owns the car. The registration (and the plate that goes with it) is permission to use it on public roads. When a car sells, ownership moves through the title. That’s why a lapsed registration doesn’t block a sale: nobody is transferring the registration in the first place.
The BMV’s Buying and Selling page spells out who does what:
- The seller and purchaser sections on the certificate of title should be completed in their entirety.
- The seller should remove the license plate from the vehicle at the time of the transaction.
- The purchaser is responsible for obtaining a new certificate of title, registration and license plate.
- The purchaser has 45 days to apply for the title, or an administrative penalty applies.
Notice what’s missing from the seller’s list: renewing the registration.
Is removing the plate all you have to do?
It’s one of the steps, not the only one. When you sell a car in Indiana, including a junk car with expired tags:
- Sign the title over completely. Fill in every part of the seller section. A half-finished title causes trouble later.
- Take the plate off at the time of the sale, as the BMV asks.
- Empty the car. Glovebox, trunk, under the seats, any toll transponder.
- Keep a record of the sale. A bill of sale with the date, price and vehicle details is good practice.
- Call your insurer after the car is gone, if it was still insured.
What to do with the expired plate
The plate comes off either way. After that, the BMV’s FAQ gives you three choices:
- Keep it. The BMV doesn’t require unused or expired plates to be surrendered.
- Move it to a different vehicle owned by the same person.
- Destroy it. The BMV recommends cutting, shredding, damaging or defacing it so it’s permanently unreadable, then throwing it away. You’re responsible for disposing of plates that are no longer registered.
Why expired tags don’t matter to a junk car buyer
We don’t drive the car away. It goes on a truck, towing is free, and you’re paid at pickup. So the car never needs to be legal on the road again, and there’s no reason to renew a registration just to sell it for junk.
What does matter is the paperwork. No title? We can still help. In Indiana a junk car sale runs on one of two papers: the title (lost it? the BMV issues a duplicate for $15) or a BMV certificate of authority, which costs $4 and is applied for with something showing the car is yours, like your current registration. If the car is under 15 model years old, state law requires one of the two. Let us know what you do have, such as a bill of sale, a registration or an insurance card, and on the call we’ll work out which route fits your car. An expired registration still shows the car is yours.
When the title is missing too
Some cars sit so long that the title goes missing along with the valid tags. Indiana’s BMV has a certificate of authority process (State Form 55018) that lets an owner dispose of a vehicle for scrap without applying for a title. That’s the $4 route in the paragraph above; the title, or a $15 BMV duplicate of it, is the other.
Plates and title from another state
If the expired plate and the title came from Illinois or another state, the Indiana plate rules above don’t govern them. Check with the state that issued them about the plate. For the title side, our guide to selling a car with an out-of-state title in Indiana covers what Indiana asks of the next owner.

Questions people ask
Can you get rid of a car if the registration is expired?
Yes. The registration only covers the car for use on the road. Selling it is done with the title. A junk car buyer tows it, so it doesn't need to be driven anywhere.
Is there a grace period in Indiana for expired tags?
We couldn't confirm one on the BMV pages we read for this guide, so we won't guess. Ask the Indiana BMV directly if you plan to keep driving the car.
Do I have to return my plate to the BMV after I sell?
No. The BMV's FAQ says unused or expired plates don't have to be surrendered. You can transfer the plate to another vehicle you own, or destroy it so it can't be read.
Do I need to renew the registration before selling?
Not to sell it to us. We buy cars with expired registration as they sit, with free towing, and you're paid at pickup.
