How to Sell a Rusted-Out Car
Updated September 30, 2026 by Cash for Junk Cars Gary Indiana
Can you sell a car with a rusted-out frame?
Yes. A junk car buyer takes it as it is, so you don't repair anything first. Describe the rust honestly: frame and floor rust matters much more than bubbling paint on a fender. Once rust ends a car's life on the road, most of its value comes from its weight and whatever parts are still worth pulling.
Rust is the slow way a car dies. It usually starts where you don’t look (under the doors, around the wheel wells, beneath the carpet) and by the time you can push a finger through the floor, the question isn’t how to fix it. It’s who will take it. Cash for Junk Cars Gary Indiana will, as it sits.

Why cars rust out around here
Winter roads across Northwest Indiana get salted, and salt spray packs into seams, rocker panels and the underside of a car. Year after year, it eats through. A car that’s spent a decade of winters in Lake County can look fine from ten feet away and be soft underneath.
Four kinds of rust, and which ones matter
Buyers don’t treat all rust the same, and neither should you when you describe it.
- Surface rust. Orange spots on bare metal, chips on the hood. Ugly, but it barely matters for a junk car.
- Bubbling under the paint. Blisters on fenders and door bottoms. The metal underneath is going, but the car’s structure is still intact.
- Rot-through. Holes in the floor pans, rocker panels or trunk floor. You can see the ground through the car. This is where most people stop thinking about repairs.
- Frame or subframe rust. The part that holds the car together. Flaking, swollen or cracked frame rails, and rusted suspension mounts.
The first two are cosmetic. The last two are why a car gets sold for junk.
How much is a rusty car worth?
There’s no honest single number, and a page that gives you one without seeing your car is guessing. Here’s what actually moves the offer:
- Weight and metal. Once rust ends a car’s road life, a big share of its value is the metal in it. Rust takes some of that metal with it.
- Parts that still work. An engine that runs, a transmission that shifts, good glass, a clean interior. Rust on the body doesn’t touch any of those.
- Completeness. A car with all its parts on it is worth more than a shell.
- Year, make, model and title. The same four details our form asks for.
So a rusty car with a healthy engine can be worth more than a clean-bodied one with a seized motor. Describe both honestly.
Is it better to sell or scrap a broken car?
For most owners, selling to a junk car buyer is the simpler path. Taking it to a scrap yard yourself means getting a car that may not be safe to drive onto a truck or trailer, and dealing with the yard’s own rules. Sell it to us instead and the tow costs you nothing, with payment handed over at pickup.
If there’s no title at all, Indiana’s BMV has a process called a certificate of authority (State Form 55018) that lets an owner dispose of a vehicle for scrap without applying for a title. No title? We can still help. In Indiana a junk car sale runs on one of two papers: the title (lost it? the BMV issues a duplicate for $15) or a BMV certificate of authority, which costs $4 and is applied for with something showing the car is yours, like your current registration. If the car is under 15 model years old, state law requires one of the two. Let us know what you do have, such as a bill of sale, a registration or an insurance card, and on the call we’ll work out which route fits your car.
What to tell a buyer about the rust
Be specific. It protects the offer and saves an awkward conversation at pickup. Before you ask for an offer, walk around the car and note:
- where the worst rust is (floor, rockers, frame, wheel wells);
- whether any holes go all the way through;
- whether the car starts, drives and steers;
- whether a wheel or suspension part is loose or broken;
- whether the doors, hood and trunk still open.
Take a few photos for yourself too. If anything about the car differs from what you told us, they help.
Getting it ready for the tow
Empty the car, including the trunk and under the seats. Take the license plate off, since the Indiana BMV asks the seller to remove it at the sale. Have the title ready, or the paper we agreed on the call if there’s no title. If the car also has mechanical problems, like a transmission that slips or won’t shift, mention that too; it’s still a car we buy.

Questions people ask
Will you buy a car if the frame is rusted through?
Yes. We buy rusted cars as they sit, for their metal and parts, not to put them back on the road. Tell us where the rust is so the offer fits the car.
Should I sand and paint the rust before selling?
No. Cosmetic fixes don't change what a junk car is worth, and describing the rust honestly matters more than hiding it.
My rusty car still runs. Is it worth more?
It can be. A running engine and transmission are parts with value. Tell us whether it starts and drives when you ask for an offer.
Can the truck still lift a car with rotted floors or a weak frame?
Tell us about it on the call. Knowing that the frame is weak or a wheel is loose lets the driver bring the right setup. Towing is free either way.
