Cash for Junk Cars Gary Indiana covers Hobart from end to end. It’s one of the towns that touch Gary, and it has two very different halves: the old lake town and the busy retail strip down by the interstate.
Hobart, briefly
Hobart is a city in Lake County about 31 miles southeast of Chicago. It was platted in 1849, became a town in 1889 and a city in 1921. The story starts with water: George Earle built a dam on the Deep River, which created Lake George, and the settlement took the name of his brother, Frederick Hobart Earle.
Lake George is still the center of things. Downtown has the historic Art Theatre, Festival Park is where people feed the ducks, and Lakefront Park has its clock tower. The Oak Savannah Trail, a rails-to-trails path, cuts right through the city.
The other half of Hobart is the retail side near US 30 and I-65, around Southlake Mall. Here’s a local quirk worth knowing: a 1993 annexation left most of the businesses around that mall with Merrillville addresses. So if your car is near Southlake and the paperwork says Merrillville, you’re not confused. We cover both.
Pickup notes for Hobart
Trains. Three railroads cross Hobart: Norfolk Southern, the Chicago, Fort Wayne and Eastern, and Canadian National. A freight train at a crossing can stop a tow truck for a while, so expect a pickup window rather than an exact time.
Which side of town. Tell us whether the car is in the older neighborhoods by the lake and downtown or out near US 30. It helps the driver plan the route and avoid the mall traffic.
Street parking. If the car is parked on the street, a spot where the truck can pull up alongside or in front of it makes pickup quicker.
Garages and back lots. A car in a detached garage off an alley is fine. Just make sure the garage door opens and the path is clear.
What Hobart sellers ask us about
Rust is a common story for older cars in this part of Indiana. Winters here mean salted roads, and older cars show it in the rocker panels, floors and frame. A rusted-out car is still a car we buy; our guide on how to sell a rusted-out car explains how rust changes an offer and what to tell us.
Paperwork works the same in Hobart as anywhere else in Indiana. Fill in the seller section of the title completely, and take your license plate off at the sale, as the Indiana BMV asks.
Neighbors we cover
Hobart borders Lake Station and New Chicago to the north. Across I-65 to the west is Merrillville. The full list of towns is on our towns page.
Questions people ask
My address near Southlake Mall says Merrillville. Is that Hobart or Merrillville?
It can be either on paper. Many businesses around the mall carry Merrillville addresses because of a 1993 annexation. It doesn't matter to us: we buy junk cars in both towns.
How fast can you get to a car in Hobart?
Same-day pickup is often possible. Hobart has three railroads crossing it, so a passing freight train can hold up a truck; we set a pickup window, not an exact minute.
Do you buy cars in Hobart that don't run?
Yes. Towing is free, so a car that won't start is no problem. Tell us whether it rolls and where it's parked.
What if I don't have the title?
We can still help. In Indiana a junk car sale runs on one of two papers: the title (lost it? the BMV issues a duplicate for $15) or a BMV certificate of authority, which costs $4 and is applied for with something showing the car is yours, like your current registration. If the car is under 15 model years old, state law requires one of the two. Let us know what you do have, such as a bill of sale, a registration or an insurance card, and on the call we'll work out which route fits your car.
