Merrillville sits right on Gary’s southern edge, which is why a junk car buyer serving Gary, Indiana covers it without a second thought. If your car is here, it’s close.

Merrillville, briefly

Merrillville is a town in Ross Township, incorporated in 1971 and named for the brothers Dudley and William Merrill. Gary and unincorporated Calumet Township border it to the north. The whole town is organized around the crossing of US 30 and Interstate 65, and it works as a major shopping hub for Northwest Indiana.

Two state roads run north to south through town. Broadway is State Road 53, and Taft Street is State Road 55. Broadway keeps going straight up into Gary, so a car on the north end of Merrillville is minutes from the city line. 73rd Avenue, also called Old Lincoln Highway, follows the original route of the Lincoln Highway.

South along Broadway, between 93rd and 101st Avenue, is Ameriplex at the Crossroads, an industrial and technology park that opened in 2005. And if you know the town’s history, the Morgan-Skinner-Boyd Homestead and the John Wood Old Mill are both on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pickup notes for Merrillville

Most Merrillville pickups fall into one of three situations.

A driveway or garage in a neighborhood. The easy case. Tell us if the car is in the garage, on the driveway or in the backyard, and whether it rolls. A car tucked behind a house needs a clear path, so move the trash cans and anything else in the way before the truck comes.

A lot on the US 30 corridor. US 30 is lined with shopping centers, restaurants and apartment complexes, and cars break down in their lots. If the lot isn’t yours, get the owner’s or manager’s okay before pickup. Tell us the business name and which row the car is in, and have your keys on hand if you have them.

On the street or at a repair shop. Give us the nearest cross street, like Broadway and 61st, or Taft and 73rd. If a shop has your car, let them know a truck is coming.

A tip on timing: US 30 traffic backs up around the interstate at busy hours, so think of the pickup time as a window rather than an exact minute.

Paperwork is the same as anywhere in Indiana

Selling in Merrillville works exactly like selling anywhere else in the state. The Indiana BMV asks sellers to fill in the seller section of the title completely and remove the license plate at the time of the sale. If the title’s missing, we can still help. In Indiana a junk car sale runs on one of two papers: the title (lost it? the BMV issues a duplicate for $15) or a BMV certificate of authority, which costs $4 and is applied for with something showing the car is yours, like your current registration. If the car is under 15 model years old, state law requires one of the two. Let us know what you do have, such as a bill of sale, a registration or an insurance card, and on the call we’ll work out which route fits your car.

If the car belonged to a parent or relative who has died, our guide on selling an inherited car in Indiana explains how the title gets into your name first.

Across I-65 is Hobart, which shares the US 30 corridor with Merrillville (the businesses around Southlake Mall even carry Merrillville addresses). Questions people ask

Do you pick up junk cars in Merrillville the same day?

Often, yes. Once you accept the offer we set a time, and same-day pickup is often possible. It depends on where the truck is that day, so we confirm the time on the call.

My car is in a store or apartment lot on US 30. Can you get it there?

Usually. Tell us the lot and where in it the car sits. If it's private property that isn't yours, check with the lot owner first so the truck isn't turned away.

Do you buy cars in Merrillville without a title?

We can still help. In Indiana a junk car sale runs on one of two papers: the title (lost it? the BMV issues a duplicate for $15) or a BMV certificate of authority, which costs $4 and is applied for with something showing the car is yours, like your current registration.
