Griffith, briefly

Griffith is a town in Lake County, founded in 1854 and incorporated in 1904, and named after Benjamin Griffith. Its ZIP code is 46319. It borders Highland to the west, Hammond to the northwest, Gary to the northeast and unincorporated Calumet Township to the east.

In 2018, Griffith residents voted 98% to 2% to leave Calumet Township, partly over the property taxes they paid to it. The town is now part of North Township. Its land takes in part of the ancient Calumet shorelines of Lake Michigan.

A town built on rail crossings

Griffith grew up where railroads met. Downtown, Broad Street once crossed six intersecting rail lines carrying 13 tracks, which made it, for a time, known as the busiest railroad crossing in the country. Broad Street was once State Road 73 and it’s still a main north-south street.

That history is still standing. The Grand Trunk depot, built in 1911 by the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, was moved in 1980 into the Griffith Historical Park and Railroad Museum on Broad Street. The depot, the E.J.&E. Griffith Interlocking Tower and the Griffith State Bank are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Griffith also has the Griffith-Merrillville Airport inside its boundaries, and Oak Ridge Prairie County Park on South Colfax Street.

Main roads. Cline Avenue and Ridge Road both serve the town, along with Broad Street. If the car is near one of them, give us the nearest cross street and a spot where the truck can pull off the road safely.
